Abstract

Summary Severe, intractable pain developed in a patient after conventional endodontic treatment. Removal of the root canal filling and sealing in various medicated dressings did not relieve the pain, neither did leaving the tooth open for drainage. The pain disappeared when the apical foramen was intentionally blocked with dentinal filings.
