Abstract

Summary A 16S rDNA sequence analysis of two Syntrophic propionate-oxidizing bacteria was done using PCR amplification of the 16S rRNA-genes from DNA isolated from two enrichment cultures. The two mesophilic propionate-oxidizing bacteria MPOB and KOPROP1 are closely related to Syntrophobacter wolinii and form one cluster within the sulfate-reducing bacteria. Specific oligonucleorides were developed and used in dot blot and in situ hybridization studies. These experiments showed that the obtained sequences were derived from the dominant propionate-oxidizing bacteria in the enrichment cultures.
