Abstract

Abstract Phase diagram studies at 1100–1500°C on lithia-stablished β/β-aluminas indicate that over a range of compositions, mixtures of β and β aluminas are obtained as the only phases. Across the area in which these mixtures are obtained, the c lattice parameter of both β and β varies continuously. This suggests that these mixtures are not two-phase equilibrium mixtures, in the phase rule sense, but are instead polytypic and that, for a given mixture, the β and β component phases have the same composition. For any given overall composition, the β/β ratio is sensitive to synthesis conditions: this cannot be explained in terms of conventional phase equilibria, but again may be rationalised with reference to polytypism.
