Abstract

The rise of the clergy's influence in Quebec during the niteteenth century has profitted from the support of the State and the political elites. Our article is attached to the thesis of a collaboration between the middle classes and the clergy. We wish to show how the priests of the various parishes of the St Maurice Valley district could count on the judicial apparatus to reinforce the influence they already had in their community.
