Abstract

Abstract The obstruction effect of gel molecules on the diffusion of Zn 2+ ions is evaluated in the presence of different electrolytes, and the observed trend is explained by considering the competitive hydration of ions and agar molecules. Further, the effect of barium, strontium, manganese and magnesium chlorides on the energy of activation required for the diffusion of Zn 2+ ion is also studied. The observed trend in the activation energy is qualitatively explained by considering the relative distortion in the water structure brought about by these different ions and agar molecules.
