Abstract

Abstract The rate of exchange of various cations and anions on hydrated zirconia is particle diffusion controlled in the concentration range 0.01-1M of the corresponding salts. The kinetic behaviour of zirconia towards cations parallels that of weak-acid resins where, contrary to strong-acid resins, the charge of the sorbed ion has a little effect on its mobility inside the exchanger. On the other hand, the mobility of anions inside zirconia decreases with the increase of their charge, which is in marked contrast with the analogous weak-base resins. This may be due to the high ability of zirconium to complex the sorbed anions.
