Synthesis of polyaniline by use of the Ullmann reaction

Abstract

Abstract An attempt to prepare polyaniline (PANI) from p-bromoaniline with the use of the Ullmann reaction is reported. It is found that the average degree of polymerization of the product is c. 38 and that the product is a mixed version of poly( p-aniline) and poly( m-aniline) skeletons in the ratio of 54.3% and 45.7%, respectively. The present polymer product is found to show intriguing magnetic properties probably due to poly( m-aniline) moieties embedded in the polymer skeleton.
