Abstract

Abstract A procedure greatly simplifying the preparation of fine powders for electron microscopy investigations is described. Sample powders are mixed with high-purity ductile metal powders such as Ag or Cu, which are then easily consolidated by die compaction. For applications necessitating a minimal amount of pressure during compaction, the pressing system can be heated, decreasing the flow stress of the ductile metal matrix. The specimens are then thinned by dimpling and ion milling for transmission electron microscopy or polished for scanning electron microscopy.
