Abstract

Abstract The paper reports on the growth of helium inert gas bubbles in the copper side of the CuNi diffusion couple. A bimodal distribution of the gas bubbles is created through the effect of the surface in the near surface region and diffusion generated excess vacancies in the diffusion zone. The analysis of the results shows that the presence of a vacancy gradient generated by the flux of diffusing atoms is not sufficient to cause bubble migration and that a temperature or stress gradient is necessary to induce the same when the intrinsic atomic mobility is sufficiently high.
