Abstract

This paper describes a new treatment technique, flooding relief, in which adaptive responding is established and reinforced by the avoidance or escape of a situationally relevant aversive stimulus. The treatment was evaluated in a multiple baseline design across situations in a case of public transportation phobia due to an intense social fear involving a facial disfiguration. At the end of the treatment the client was able to ride public transportation without difficulty.
