Under the leadership of MTU CFC Solutions GmbH (MTU Friedrichshafen GmbH), a consortium has been working since 1990 on the development of the Carbonate Fuel Cell. A range of process-technology solutions have been found for the implementation of this technology. Weak points, which have to be expected with new developments of this type, can only be reliably established and rectified experimentally. The construction and operation of several field trials and demonstration systems on customers' premises is therefore essential prior to market introduction. The main result of this project is the confirmation that the MTU Hot Module Fuel Cell System works in the required way. During trial operation, experience and knowledge was gathered, which will be used in the design and construction of following systems, ultimately leading to be maturity of the product. The Carbonate Fuel Cell is the most suitable fuel cell technology for the stationary conversion of hydrocarbon combustion gases in industrial power heating systems, since it has the optimum working temperature, in addition to the high level of electrical efficiency.
