Abstract

Oxfam's Gender and Development Unit established in 1985 has evolved into the Gender and Program Learning Team, a body which will allow the organization to improve learning across programs, sharing experiences and practice with regard to gender, capacity-building, conflict, and development alternatives. While people working on gender have been and will continue to be situated throughout the organization, the Gender and Program Learning Team is an important specialized team dedicated to making gender an issue on the organizational agenda, getting gender policy implemented, and pressing for internal and external change. The team has drawn Oxfam's attention to areas of concern for women, such as violence and the rise of religious conservatism. Oxfam believes that program managers must be held responsible for implementing gender policy and given the practical resources and support to do so.
