Abstract

•Androgen titres respond to social instability, dominance rank and mating system.•Insects lack androgens, but juvenile hormone (JH) has key parallels with androgens.•Both hormones mediate the fecundity–life span trade-off.•We review how JH responds to social instability, dominance rank and mating system.•In general, social responsiveness of JH parallels that of androgens.
