Abstract

Abstract Raman spectra are reported for some tetrahedral, tetrahalo-anions of FE III, Mn II, Fe II, and Zn II in the solid state, as tetra-alkylammonium salts, and, for many of them, in nitromethane solution. The v 1 ( A 1) mode has been assigned in all cases, and force constants have been calculated, using a modified Urey—Bradley force field, for solid MCl 4 n− salts (M  Fe 3+, Mn 2+, Fe 2+, and Zn 2+), and, using literature data, for solid Cs 2ZnX 4 (X  Cl, Br, and I) and ZnX 4 2− (X  Br or I) in aqueous solution. The Raman spectra of various salts containing the distorted tetrahedral CuCl 4 2− ion are also reported.
