Abstract A brief discussion of the imaging by the Veselago lens is given with a special attention to the absorption inside the lens. The near field regime is considered as the best candidate for the subwavelength imaging. A near field lens with a virtual focus is discussed in the original part of the paper. It is shown that it does not have some disadvantages of a lens with a real focus. A small absorption is not crucial for such a lens. The theory can be created without taking into account the imaginary part of the dielectric constant ϵ . The field does not diverge near the focus as Im ϵ ⇒ 0 as it does in the lens with the real focus. Thus, the total absorption in this case may be significantly less. The lens or the sequence of the lenses can be used for three-dimensional image transmission.
