Topological excitations and the phase diagram of the superconducting cuprates

Abstract

Abstract We study the destruction of long-range antiferromagnetic order in the high- T c superconductors La 2− x Sr x CuO 4 and YBa 2Cu 3O 6+ x , within the framework of the CP 1-nonlinear sigma model coupled to Dirac fermions that describe the doped holes. Skyrmion topological defects are shown to be introduced by doping and their energy is used as an order parameter for the antiferromagnetic state. We obtain analytic expressions for the skyrmion energy as a function of doping which allow us to plot the curves T N( x c)× x c and M( x)× x, for the two compounds, in good quantitative agreement with the experimental data. We also discuss stripes formation and analyse its effects on the curves of the phase diagram.
