Abstract

Abstract The effect of rapid solidification on the volume fraction, size distribution, and phase transformations in hypereutectic compositions of the BiMn system has been investigated by optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and X-ray diffraction, along with the magnetic property measurements. DSC measurements indicated that as the atomic per cent of manganese increases, the amount of Mn 1.08Bi phase increases in the as-spun ribbons. The resulting magnetic properties and structural changes occurring with ageing and annealing (with and without an applied magnetic field) are discussed.
