Abstract

Abstract A review is presented of the theoretical aspects of surface phonons. The increase in sophistication of the methods employed is traced from early work based on simple force constant models through Green's function methods coupled with shell, bond-charge. and pseudoparticle models to the present-day emphasis on first-principles calculations. Numerous examples of the interplay between theory and experiment are pointed out.
