Abstract

Abstract A major obstacle in using mathematical models to make management decisions is the difficulty in obtaining precise values for the parameters. A classical stream pollution model for biochemical oxygen demand and dissolved oxygen is analyzed under the assumptions that the rate coefficients may vary along the stream but remain within fixed known intervals and the initial conditions are only known to lie in certain intervals. The upper and lower envelope for the set of solutions of all systems satisfying these conditions are obtained using differential inequality techniques that were recently developed for compartmental models.
