Abstract

At present the turbulent flow around ships can be determined only for model Reynolds numbers of about 10 except when using wall functions; however, the latter leads to dubious results. The present research program aimed to develop a new procedure for such calculations avoiding wall functions. A finite-volume method using boddy-fitted coordinates as chosen. It employs the O-equation turbulence model of Cebeci-Smith. For two ship models (Wigley, HSVA tanker) computed velocities and pressures are compared to experimental values. The coincidence corresponds in quality to the best ones of other existing methods. The remaining errors are attributed mostly to the turbulence model.
