Abstract

Abstract Energy losses and energy loss distributions of fast charged particles in a 60 mg/cm 2 xenon-filled wire chamber have been studied by means of proportional gas scintillation. We present data obtained in the low β-region with protons as well as with minimum ionizing pions and highly relativistic electrons. Results are compared with recent theoretical calculations based on the Photon Absorption Ionization Model. Being able to identify accompanying δ-rays by means of on-line pulse-shape discrimination we also discuss their contribution to the energy loss distribution.
