Abstract

Jewish folkloristics remained a hidden aspect of Wissenschaft as a tool of emancipation until it emerged as a separate field within Jewish nationalism at the turn of the century. Folklore was then collected as a component of national-cultural expression that included art, literature, music, and the academic fields of history, linguistics and literary criticism. When Jewish nationalism came under attack by Russian Communism, Jewish folkloristics was forced to conform to the vagaries of Soviet ideology.
