Abstract

Abstract CoCrW coatings were deposited onto stainless steel and carbon steel substrates by dc planar magnetron (DCPM) sputtering and then were melted using an electron beam. The resulting electron beam induced changes in the microstructure and composition of the coating are presented. A concentric three-zone structure was observed comprising a super-refined grain size monophase layer, a columnar and an equiaxed two-phase microstructure. Intermixing of the coating by the substrate, tungsten content and grain size in the coating were shown to affect the microhardness of the coating.
