Abstract

Abstract “Scientific Millenarianism” connotes concerns about scientific mischances that might threaten humankind in the far distant future. Examples are meteor impact, global climate change, disposal of radioactive waste, and nuclear war. Each of these threats extend over hundreds if not thousands of years, yet they command the serious attention today of regulatory bodies, politicians, and technologists. Society's responses include technical fixes; extension of knowledge; institutional responses; and religious responses.
