Abstract

Abstract Eight binary compounds of oxygen and fluorine have been described, although there is incontrovertible evidence for only four. They are of interest because they are very powerful oxidizing agents, and some have been studied as potential rocket fuels; they also possess structural, energetic, and spectral properties which indicate unusual bonding. This article reviews present information about the physical properties of oxygen fluorides, and correlates these with simple bonding theory.
