Integration of design and control for energy integrated distillation

Abstract A method for development of control structures is presented for an energy integrated distillation column. The method contains three levels. First the feasible operating region is determined, second the feasible static control structures are proposed and screened, and third, the additional degrees of freedom stemming from process dynamics are handled using additional actuators and control loops. The advantage of the three-layered strategy is that the first two layers can be dealt with early during process development while the third layer may be added at the appropriate design point where information on the dynamic behaviour is available.
