Abstract

Neurotrophins are a family of growth factor proteins sharing a similar amino acid sequence homology. These growth factors mediate a wide variety of physiological actions within the central and peripheral nervous systems by binding to receptors localized on distinct populations of neurons. The potent and specific actions of individual neurotrophins in promoting cell survival and differentiation make these molecules intriguing candidates for therapies targeting neurodegenerative or traumatic conditions.
