Abstract

Abstract Poly( N, N-dimethylaminoethyl acrylate) [poly(DMAEA)] is a weak base in aqueous solution and slowly hydrolyses at ambient temperature; the reaction has been monitored by 1H and 13C NMR and shown to reach a limiting conversion of ∼60% after 1–2 weeks. Poly( N, N-diethylaminoethyl acrylate) reacts similarly and both polymers undergo ester interchange reactions in methanol. 13C NMR spectra of poly(DMAEA) prepared by radical polymerization show no evidence for any defect structures.
