Abstract

Abstract Cellulase [see 1,4-(1,3; 1,4)-β- d-glucan 4-glucanohydrolase, EC 3.2.1.4] production by Penicillium funiculosum has been studied in an instrumented fermenter. In a mineral salts-casein medium supplemented with a high concentration of cellulose (4 – 6%), rapid enzyme production was observed. Exo-β- d-glucanase [exo-cellobiohydrolase, 1,4-β- d-glucan cellobiohydrolase, EC 3.2.1.91], endo-β- d-glucanase [cellulase, 1,4-(1,3; 1,4)-β- d-glucan 4-glucanohydrolase, EC 3.2.1.4] and β- d-glucosidase [β- d-glucoside glucohydrolase, EC 3.2.1.21] activities of 3 – 3.5, 18– 30 and 9 – 13 units ml −1, respectively, were obtained. The results indicate the potential of this strain as an attractive alternative to Trichoderma reesei and its mutants.
