Abstract

Abstract The oxidation of the ethylmagnesium and ethylaluminium compounds has been shown to give i/ E curves with well-formed waves and conveniently long limiting current plateaux. These limiting currents are, however, inconveniently low for preparative scale electrolyses due to slow chemical steps during the formation of alkyllead compounds. These anodic processes have been shown to be very dependent on the state of the electrode surface. In tetrahydrofuran complete poisoning of the electrode eventually occurs and this may explain the preference for other ethers in the industrial scale process.
