Abstract

Summary This review reports recent advances in teh knowledge of (1) physiologic regulation of aldosterone secretion, (2) pathologic conditions associated with disturbances of aldosterone secretion, metabolism and effects and (3) other related conditions which must be considered in the differential diagnosis of possible aldosteronism. The reader's attention is drawn to changing concepts and usage of the terms “primary aldosteronism” and “secondary aldosteronism.” The current trend is toward the use of these terms in a pathogenetic sense rather than to define specific clinical syndromes.
