Abstract

Slowly growing cells in medium containing succinate as carbon source were labeled for about half a generation and about two generations with [ 3H]thymine, and the survival on storage at liquid-nitrogen temperature was followed. Cells in both samples were inactivated in a first-order way. If, as seems likely, death due to tritium decay is recessive, the possibility that these cells possessed two identical chromosomes that replicate alternately is excluded.
