Yak university New Haven, Connecticut OFFICE OF THE PROVOST 11 March 1966 Professor Joshua Lederberg Department of Genetics Stanford University School of Medicine Palo Alto, California Dear Professor Lederberg: In order to form the basis of a discussion in- volving the desirability of setting up a Department of Genetics in the Yale School of Medicine, I am soliciting counsel from yourself and your counter- parts at Michigan, Washington, and Wisconsin. Can I trouble you to tell me briefly, why such a Department was established at Stanford? I would also find it very helpful to know how the Department was set up; e.g* did it originally comprise geneti- cists who had been working in other departments of the Medical School? I would also appreciate comments on how the Department now relates to other pre-clini- cal departments: Microbiology, Physiology, Biochem- istry, and Cell Biology. Would you include as well any brochure which describes your Department. Your help in this matter will be greatly appreciated. Sincerely yours, Arthur M. Ross Assistant to the Provost for the Sciences AMR:nbe
