Abstract

Abstract A model for oscillatory tidal flow over parallel topography is considered, with a view to determining associated time-mean currents. It is found that the Coriolis force and bottom drag are each responsible for distinct mechanisms of mean-current generation. Application is made to the interpretation of current data (Caston & Stride, 1970), which indicated a clockwise mean-current circulation around the Norfolk Sandbanks.
