Abstract

Abstract The powerful methods of optimal control developed by Pontryagin are here applied to the stirred tank. These are first described briefly, a consise statement of the necessary theorems being given in the appendix. The importance of their being applied precisely is brought out by considering the time optimal control and the singular case where existence theorems fail is considered with some care. Other criteria of control and the practical implementation of optimal control are discussed.
