Abstract

Highlights ► We manipulated the opportunity for between-group hostility in two monkey groups. ► We predicted behavioural adjustments on the basis of two contrasting hypothesis. ► The cooperative hypothesis (1) predicts an increase in social cohesion. ► The induce tension hypothesis (2) predicts a deterioration of social relationships. ► Aggression was higher and the hierarchy steeper, partially supporting hypothesis (2).
