Abstract

Abstract Wool follicles in the skin of sheep are arranged in groups. Characteristic two-dimensional spatial relationships exist between the groups as well as between the follicles within each group. The developmental origin of primary follicle patterns is related to a simple physiological model employing diffusion as one of its major components. A computer study of the deterministic properties of the model shows it to give a satisfactory explanation of the pattern of primary follicles.
