Abstract

This remarkable tower is situated at the west end of the University Library at Bombay University. The tower is named after the mother of its benefactor Premchand Roychand, a renowned Indian banker. Stylistically, the tower reflects Gothic Revival architecture of contemporaneous buildings in Europe. Although the campanile was influenced by the cathedral in Florence, the design incorporated sculptural figures representing the western Indian castes.
