Abstract

Abstract The present paper describes some experimental work which has been undertaken in order to estimate the practical purity requirements for the halide reactants which are used in the MCVD optical fiber preform making process. Preforms with either P 2O 5 or P 2O 5GeO 2 doped cores have been fabricated starting from reactants in which known amounts of impurities had been added (Fe, H 2O, SiHCl 3). The fiber loss spectra are only weakly dependant of the impurity content of reactants.
