Abstract

Dysphagia is the general term for disordered swallowing. The inability to swallow safely will have an impact on the ability to maintain both hydration and nutrition at an adequate level. Additionally, not being able to meet and socialise over a meal or a drink, or enjoy a family meal together has vast ramifications on one’s enjoyment of life and social interaction. This article provides a simple overview of the swallowing process and common clinical problems and a review of some of the current evaluations, treatments and rehabilitation options available to patients with dysphagia.
