THE SPECTRA OF $H_{2}O$ AND $D_{2}O$ IN THE VACUUM ULTRAVIOLET$^{\ast}$

Abstract

The absorption spectra of $H_{2}O$ and $D_{2}O$ between 1240 and 1130 {\AA} have been photographed at a dispersion of about $4 {\AA}/mm$. Vibrational analyses are made of the two band systems with origins at 1240 and 1218 {\AA} which correspond to two Rydberg transitions. The relative intensities of the $D_{2}O$ bands which belong to the system with its origin at 1240 {\AA} are estimated from photo-multiplier recordings of the spectrum. A Franck-Condon calculation based on these intensities yields an approximate geometry for the Rydberg state. Three new bands showing rotational lines or sub-bands have been observed near 1184, 1166 and 1144 {\AA}. They probably correspond to three other Rydberg transitions.
