This report on Australia's largest consultation with lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people finds that there is a strong desire amongst same-sex couples to have their relationships formally recognised. While de facto recognition is seen to reflect the relationships of a significant number of consultation participants (17%), many more participants wanted the choice of the additional right to have their relationships recognised through a formal opt-in process such as marriage (42%) or civil unions (33%). The report finishes with eight recommendations for legislative changes and community education.
