Abstract

Abstract The effects of local variations in interfacial tension on the motion of drops in liquid—liquid systems are discussed. Experimental observations of the various types of motion which are caused by the addition of solute to the dispersed phase are described. Approximate models of the drop motion are used to make quantitative estimates of the relative importance of different dynamical modes in dissipating the surface energy. Values of the parameters which characterize the transient behaviour of the oscillation mode are estimated and compared with observed values.
