«Côtes du Rhône» is a young and dynamic vineyard. From 1956 to 1986, its area has increased by 240% and the production has increased fivefold. That progession has been achieved through the transformation of a dry, mediterranean mixed-farming into a vine-growing monoculture associated with much land clearance. However, the Rhone vineyard has not yet found its specific identity. It has to get rid of the legacy inherited by its long dependency towards the Burgundian trade. It has, too, to create and develop a real «vine-grower» spirit among vine-growers who are still mainly concerned with grape-production. The professional organizations are now longing to master in a better way the trade-name guaranteeing the quality of wine (appellations contrôlées) and wish to make «Côtes du Rhône» «one of the best among the best», in order to be able to dissociate themselves better from the new which are appellations increasing in number during the last decade in South-eastern France's vineyards.
