Photogenerated solitons in poly(phenylacetylene): confinement by short polyenes

Abstract

Abstract We report first experimental observation of photogenerated confined charged solitons in a short polyene system, poly(phenylacetylene). Inter-chain charge separation allowed us to observe the photoinduced activity. Effective correlation energy at soliton site is estimated to be ∼ 0.6 eV corresponding to the bare on-site Coulomb energy U o ≃ 3.6 eV. We found that the lattice relaxation effect is important even in a short polyene.
