Abstract

Abstract The identity of the fatigue phenomenon present in photo-multiplier tubes with the effect discovered by Malter as a result of electron bombardment of thin oxide films of high resistivity has been established. The empirical and theoretical expressions which describe the phenomenon in photomultiplier tubes also explain the data reported by Malter, both with respect to time variations and final saturation limits. The present knowledge of the nature and control of fatigue in phototubes should help to develop practical applications of the Malter effect.
