Abstract

Abstract By keeping some dependence of the fields on the compactified coordinate, we derive a first-order form of Polyakov's rigid string from the membrane action through simultaneous compactification of a space-time and a membrane dimension. The first-order action has a gauge invariance which agrees with the one recently introduced in a quantum treatment of the rigid string. Here the invariance is understood as a remnant of the three-dimensional coordinate invariance of the membrane.
