Abstract

Summary A computational model derived by Slater for distinguishing polygenic inheritance from the effects of a single dominant gene was applied to reactive psychoses. The method of obtaining psychiatric histories favored recording more serious illnesses such as manic-depressive illness and schizophrenia. Secondary cases of bipolar manic-depressive illness and schizophrenia were infrequently observed, while unipolar depressives and reactive psychoses were noted more often. The distribution of secondary cases favored polygenic transmission.
