Abstract

Abstract The infrared spectra of concentrated solutions of a number of ammonium salts in liquid ammonia under pressure at room temperature have been recorded. The analysis of the frequency shifts of the NH 3 vibrational fondamentals and the NH 4 + stretching vibrations suggests the simultaneous existence of the hydrogen-bonded systems NH 4 + … NH 3, NH 4 +…X − and NH 3 … X −. This conclusion is supported by the analogy between the spectra of the solution and that of the solid ammoniate NH 4Cl, 3NH 3, in which these different hydrogen bonds are present. The spectrum of the solid ammoniate at low temperature has also been analysed.
