Abstract

Abstract A new and direct automatic method has been developed to measure the residual H 2 content of MOX fuel to be irradiated in a PWR. The sources of hydrogen in the pellets are either free hydrogen or moisture and can play an important role in the possible in-pile corrosion of the zircaloy cladding. The method is based on the simultaneous determinations of water with an hygrometrie probe and of hydrogen by a thermal conductivity cell and allows an original check of the two impurities concentrations. The entire set-up is fully computerized (weighing, titrating and display of results) and leads to an accuracy better than 0.1 μg H 2/ g ( U, Pu) O 2 which fits the required PWR specification.
